The kids were so excited when a new book arrived in the mail today. It was the Reader's Digest Children's Songbook with a companion CD. I popped in the CD and went to fold some clothes. A few minutes later, I hear this:
"MOM!! This CD is inappropriate!"
"Asker, what's wrong? This song is fine. It's called Camptown Races. I used to listen to this song when I was little."
"Mom, they said a bad word."
"I don't think so, buddy, maybe you just misunderstood."
"No, mom, seriously. They said..." whispers, "butthole!"
He wasn't kidding.

Subject to Interpretation
The kids have been singing Christmas songs around the house for the last few days. Overheard, recently...
"I saw Mommy's pickle sandwich..." (I saw Mommy tickle Santa)
"Let Diego sing, Let Diego sing..." (Let the angels sing)
and my favorite,
Happy Birthday Jesus
I'm so glad it's Christmas
All the pencils (tinsel) and knives (lights)
make the holidays bright
but the real gift is you.
Happy Birthday Jesus
I'm so glad it's Christmas
All the carrots (carols) and smells (bells)...

If I Hear Karen Carpenter Sing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" One More Time, I'm Going To Pop My Own Ear Drums.
It's not even December yet. How can I be sick of Christmas music already? The kids keep asking for Christmas music, and since it's such a nice change from the Muppet Show cd with which they are currently obsessed (Miss Piggy is almost as bad as Karen Carpenter), I agree. Then, two songs later, I am going crazy. But I have to admit, the Grinch song is so cool!

The Wonderful World of Kid's Music
I love music. I studied music in college. I sing in church. I encourage musical diversity in my kids. But after 5 years of the Wiggles, Raffi, the VeggieTales, and Kid's Sing cds, I am begging for mercy.
I used to like the Wiggles. Their songs are clean. They have a nice combination of traditional songs and original ones. They even have interesting accents (no mom, it's bahnahna not banana). But- and I have inside information on this one- do you realize that the US military uses Captain Feathersword songs as an interrogation tool at Guantanamo? My kids figured that one out long ago. "Hey, T, let's put Zardo Zap on again and watch mommy explode!"
Now the Veggie Tales, I like....sometimes. Any group that introduces Gilbert & Sullivan to 3 year olds is not all bad. And I love having the perfect song to sing when I can't find my hairbrush. But have you ever noticed how the Veggies are a little schizo? I'm wondering what kind of influence they're having on my kids. I mean, I hear my kids singing about how they've never kissed a chipmunk, never gotten head lice, and never been to Boston in the fall. Sounds a bit suspect.
When I was little, kids' music meant normal songs that were sung by kids. On our tapes, the kids sang bible songs, and lullabies and occasionally a goofy song. Nowadays, it seems like the "normal" songs are the exception. And there is no subject not good enough to be put in a kids' song. We subscribe to XM radio which has a few kids' channels. We've heard "Poop goes the Weasel", "You're getting on my nerves" (which a mom sings to her kids) and "Funky, like a diaper." There are definitely some failed musicians out there singing kids' music.
I think that a few artists are fabulous. I love Laurie Berkner (totally non-annoying), and Tom Chapin. I like the Kid's Worship CDs because I know God must LOVE those CDs. But, in our house, we have switched to books on CD for a little while. Right now, it's a pleasure hearing A.A. Milne and E.B. White classics while we are on our way to the food store. But, I'm sure after a few weeks of listening to Piglet snort, I will be ready for Dorothy the Dinosaurs' A-heh-heh-heh again.
